The Adafruit TMF8801 Time of Flight Sensor is a great Time of Flight distance sensor from ams Osram in the TMF series of chips. The TMF8801 in particular can do 20mm to 2.5 meters at 33 Hz update rate.The sensor contains a very tiny invisible laser source and a matching sensor.
