Teardown
The aluminum body construction and glued components make the SP-1 more tricky to get into than the other Teenage Engineering device that I recently took apart, the EP-2350 ting.
In addition to glue, the back panel is held in place by 2 small torx head screws.
There is a glue dot in the small white square on the PCB silkscreen near the top left corner with back cover removed and PCB facing up. It's near the play button which has a red triangle icon on the front of the device.
There is a slightly less tacky glue coating on the inside of the back cover.
A plastic prying instrument would be best to gently pry up the back panel, starting on the edge with the side plastic endcap. I used a a flat head screwdriver, and my device has the knicks and scratches to prove it.
There are two more torx screws holding the PCB in place that become visible once the back panel is removed.
There is also a third screw that is underneath the side plastic end cap. The end cap is glued all along the front side of the device. Use a plastic prying instrument to gently free it.
The endcap retains another plastic insert that extends the very small surface mount buttons to a larger satisfying rectangle shape on the side of the device.
You must remove the ribbon cable from the connector on the front of the PCB in order to be able to remove and flip it over. Gently pull the cable straight back and out of the connector. There does not appear to be any locking mechanism to actuate.
There are two small wires that connect the battery to the PCB. There is enough slack in them to flip over the PCB.
