# Fruit Jam Mac Emulator

## Overview

What's the first thing you want to do with your Fruit Jam? Run a Mac emulator of course! Intrepid CircuitPython core developer [jepler](https://learn.adafruit.com/u/jepler) forked the [pico-mac emulator](https://github.com/adafruit/pico-mac) and made it run smoothly like fresh jam spread on toast for the Fruit Jam. This means video output via HSTX, PIO USB, PSRAM support and even audio output from the onboard I2S DAC.

The pico-mac emulator embeds the [umac Mac 128K emulator](https://github.com/evansm7/umac) to run on a Raspberry Pi Pico/Pico2. It's been tested with System 2.0 up to System 7.5.5 for a wide range of emulation options.

The Adafruit fork of the emulator [provides pre-compiled UF2's](https://github.com/adafruit/pico-mac/releases) that you can drag and drop onto the Fruit Jam to get started right away. This guide provides a disk image ( **.IMG** file) that you can use or you can bring your own.

# Fruit Jam Mac Emulator

## Software Prep

There are two steps to running the pico-mac emulator on the Fruit Jam: the pico-mac firmware and a Mac HFS image on a microSD card. The firmware is available as a precompiled UF2 in the [GitHub repository in the latest release.](https://github.com/adafruit/pico-mac/releases)

[Pre-compiled pico-mac UF2 files](https://github.com/adafruit/pico-mac/releases)
There are a few UF2 files to choose from with different resolution and overclock settings:

- 400kB or 4096kB (the latter uses PSRAM, and may perform slower overall but can run more software)
- 512x342 or 640x480 desktop resolution (512x342 is more compatible but has black screen margins)
- Overclocked or not (overclocked may run faster but may be less reliable)

Choose whichever one suits your emulation needs and proceed to put the Fruit Jam into bootloader mode. To enter the bootloader, hold down the **BOOT/**** BUTTON #1 button **(highlighted in red below), and while continuing to hold it (don't let go!), press and release the **reset button **(highlighted in blue below).**Continue to hold the BOOT/BUTTON #1 button until the RP2350 drive appears!**

Info: If you're using the .IMG file below, use the **pico-mac-adafruit\_fruit\_jam-4096k-512x342-psram-oc.uf2**

![reset and boot highlighted](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/760/medium800/hacks_Resetboot.jpg?1754408145 )

**Drag and drop the pico-mac UF2 file** that you chose onto the Fruit Jam. The RP2350 drive will disappear. Next, you'll prep the microSD card.

## microSD Card

You'll need to set up a Mac HFS disk image ( **.IMG** file) on a FAT-formatted microSD card. There are a lot of disk images for Mac emulation on [archive.org](https://archive.org/). The image below has been tested with the pico-mac emulator on a Fruit Jam and has popular shareware software included if you want to retreat quickly to the early 90's.

[macImage.zip](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/817/original/macImage.zip?1754490678)
After formatting your microSD card, save your **.IMG** file onto it. If you want the image to be **read-only** , save it as **umac0ro.img**. If you want to be able to **read and write** to the image, you'll save it as **umac0w.img**. The **.IMG** file should be the only file on the microSD card.

The ONLY file that should be on the microSD card is the **.IMG** file. Sometimes macOS adds hidden metadata files and folders on mass storage devices. If you find you're having issues booting into the image and you're using macOS, check the card for these files.

Warning: The ONLY file that should be on the microSD card is the .IMG file! Make sure to delete any extra hidden files or folders.

## Advanced Hackers Enter Here

If these steps to Mac emulation were too easy for you and you need to experience the trial and error of compilation and corrupted files then check out the options below for deep rabbit holes to burrow into in the pursuit of the ideal retro Mac experience.

### Build-Your-Own pico-mac (Advanced)

There are [build instructions for pico-mac](https://github.com/adafruit/pico-mac?tab=readme-ov-file#build) if you want to build your own UF2 file instead of using the pre-compiled UF2 images. You will need the [Pico/RP2040 SDK](https://github.com/raspberrypi/pico-sdk) setup on your machine.

### Customizing the Disk Image (Advanced)

If you want to customize your disk image, you'll want to run an emulator on your desktop computer so that you can load software from your file system onto it. The [Mini vMac emulator](https://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/dnld_std.html) works really well for this. Documentation about this emulator is available from the [Gryphel Project](https://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/index.html).

![vMac emulator](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/813/medium800/hacks_Screenshot_2025-08-06_100654.png?1754489265 )

When the emulator starts up, you'll load the disk image that you want to build on. You can install additional software onto the image and then try out the **.IMG** file with the pico-mac emulator on the Fruit Jam. You will need to rename the **.IMG** file as either **umac0ro.img** or **umac0w.img** on the microSD card.

## Hardware Prep

To experience the vintage beeps of the Mac, plug in the oval speaker JST plug into the speaker port on the Fruit Jam.

![speaker jst](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/832/medium640/hacks_editedP1480021.jpg?1754512959)

Then, attach the top plate to the Fruit Jam with the three included screws.

![plate attached](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/833/medium640/hacks_editedP1480016.jpg?1754512988)

Plug an HDMI cable into the DVI port on the Fruit Jam for video output to a monitor or TV. Use a USB-C cable for powering the Fruit Jam.

![hdmi and usb](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/834/medium640/hacks_edited_P1480004.jpg?1754513015)

Grab a USB keyboard and mouse and plug them into the USB ports on the Fruit Jam.

![keyboard and mouse](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/835/medium640/hacks_edited_P1480007.jpg?1754513035)

Insert the microSD card with the Mac HFS volume that you prepped on the Software page into the microSD slot on the Fruit Jam.

![inserting sd card](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/831/medium640thumb/hacks_sdCard.jpg?1754511764)

Now you're ready to boot back into the early 90's!

## Use

You've got your UF2 loaded, your disk image on the microSD card and the Fruit Jam hardware gathered. It's time for some Mac emulation!

Flip the Fruit Jam **ON/OFF** switch to **ON**. You should hear the **BEEP** from the onboard speaker to let you know that the Mac is booting. Then, you'll see the desktop load.

![mac booting on fruit jam](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/913/medium800thumb/hacks_boot.jpg?1754929133 )

Now its time to kick back and relax with a session of Crystal Quest.

![crystal quest gameplay](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/914/medium640thumb/hacks_crystal.jpg?1754929229)

Or maybe Battle Chess?

![battle chess gameplay](https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/138/915/medium640thumb/hacks_chess.jpg?1754929696)

When you're ready to take a break, save your screen with some flying toasters or vibe with Fish! from the After Dark 2 collection.
